TAMPA, Fla. — When you leave Winnipeg and fly into the middle of the National Hockey League — or, at least, to cities that have National Hockey League franchises, you realize how unimportant Winnipeg and Phoenix really are.
While folks in Winnipeg have become absolutely convinced that the NHL is leaving Phoenix and moving the Coyotes back to the Manitoba capital, the rest of the United States’ hockey world has little or no idea. This week, in both Sunrise and Tampa, two cities that have NHL franchises, most people had no clue that the deal to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix was about to crater. And if you ask newspaper people and hockey fans about the Atlanta Thrashers, there is absolutely no sense that that franchise is in trouble and the owners are prepared to sell the club to anyone with a dollar and a pulse.
But back in Canada, it’s a different story. I’ve received so many e-mails and texts in recent days from people who believe the NHL is returning like, maybe next week, the buzz is palpable. Even here in the south.
I guess TSN set it off by suggesting that maybe, sort of, the NHL could be returning to Winnipeg. Whether it’s Atlanta or Phoenix, no one is certain, but since TSN’s main bingo callers have claimed that Winnipeg has its best chance ever, that’s good enough for gospel back up in my home town.
Sorry, but I’m going to be a little more cautious, thank you. I certainly believe the NHL is eventually coming back to Winnipeg eventually, but I’m not sure when that will be. I just think that when it comes to Phoenix, the optics for Gary Bettman are atrocious. How do you give up on a market like Phoenix, now, after the franchise has lost five different ownership groups and more than $300 million since Bettman ripped it out of Winnipeg and moved it to the desert.
If Phoenix returns to Winnipeg before Bettman gets a U.S. TV contract, he’d better resign as NHL commissioner. For one thing it will cost the NHL owners millions. For another, his misguided decision to move the Jets to Phoenix in the first place will be a black mark on both the league and on him personally.
If he had any sense at all, he would have moved the Coyotes back to Winnipeg in about 2003. But by waiting this long, he’s just wasted more of his league’s treasure and cut the players salaries unnecessarily. The NHLPA should sue him for all the revenues he’s wasted by putting franchises in rotten hockey markets. If the Coyotes had been moved when they just started losing huge boxes of cash, the salary cap would be higher and the players would be making significantly more money.
And that’s why I’ll remain cautious. Bettman can’t allow that franchise to move without exhausting every possible opportunity available to him to save it. Why? Because if he was as ignorant as it appears he was when he moved the Jets to Phoenix in the first place (and just about everyone with a discernible I.Q. told him it wouldn’t work), he’ll look even more stupid if he’s forced to move them back.
By the way, with all the talk of the NHL coming back to Winnipeg to play in a smaller arena than the one we had when the team left, where’s Jim Silver? Remember him, he’s the guy who worked tirelessly to run the Jets out of town in 1995. Haven’t heard a peep from him this time around.
