The Coach and The Doc Take… The Patriots

TAMPA… HEADING NORTH — There are people in the Heartland who believe that if Eli Manning wins Sunday’s Super Bowl, he’ll pass brother Peyton in all levels of the game. With a win on Sunday, Eli will be the bigger winner. Eli will be the greater leader. Honest, Eli will be a better quarterback than Peyton.

Poppycock.

Here are the numbers: Peyton has been named MVP four times, Eli none. Peyton has been to the Pro Bowl 11 times in 12 seasons; Eli, twice in eight seasons. Peyton has been first-team All-Pro five times, Eli none. Peyton’s career passer’s rating is 94.9, Eli’s is 82.1. Need more? Didn’t think so.

Peyton has one Super Bowl ring; Eli has one Super Bowl ring. Trent Dilfer has one Super Bowl ring.

Peyton is a better quarterback than his brother. Easy.

However, this weekend, Eli could join his brother with a ticket to the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, and that’s something nobody would expect with Eli’s numbers. If Eli ties Ben Roethlisberger and claims his second Super Bowl ring this Sunday aevening, Eli will punch his ticket to the Hall and that’s a surprise in itself.

Eli Manning

This season, Eli was fourth in passing yards in the NFL with 4,933, 13th in passing percentage at 61.0, fifth in completions with 359, sixth in TD passes with 29 and seventh in interceptions with 16. He didn’t really have a great year, leading his team to a 9-7 record in the regular season, but he has been superb in the playoffs and that’s definitely when it counts the most.

Of course, on Sunday, Nov. 6, Manning threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns as the Giants beat New England 24-20. If Manning can do it again on Sunday, his legacy is set.

Sadly, The Coach and Dr. Football aren’t sure he can. In fact, our two experts — two experts who had terrific seasons picking winners this year — believe that Eli just might get his butt handed to him.

SUPER BOWL XLVI

THE 2012 NFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME FOR THE VINCE LOMBARDI TROPHY

SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT 5 P.M. CST

NFC Champion New York Giants (12-7) vs. AFC Champion New England Patriots (15-3)

Line: Patriots by 3.5

Super Bowl Sunday is widely regarded as the Thanksgiving Day of sporting events, and wings have become its turkey-like centerpiece. Americans will scoff down 1.25 billion chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday alone, as well as 8 million slices of pizza, 46 million pounds of potato chips and 71 million pounds of guacamole, probably before Madonna hits the stage.

That’s a good afternoon.

There happens to be a football game as well. Here are a few predictions. New England’s Tom Brady will throw for a bunch of touchdowns. And after each one, NBC will remind us that he is married to a “super model”. Giants Eli Manning will also throw a bunch of touchdown passes, and after each one NBC will show his brother Peyton cheering him on from some millionaires suite. NBC will also remind us that Eli and Peyton are brothers as if we didn’t know.

Anyway, expect the Patriots to get their revenge and cover the 3 ½ point spread.

This season the Doc was 174-92 straight up and 149-117 against the spread. The Coach, who picked both the Giants and Patriots two weeks ago, 178-88 straight up and 146-120 against the spread.

DR FOOTBALL: PATRIOTS TO WIN AND COVER.

THE COACH: PATRIOTS TO WIN AND COVER.

Why I’m Betting the Pats on Sunday

Tom Brady

I believe Tom Brady is a winner. It’s not a lot more complicated than that.

I’m not sure the New York Giants can cover Brady’s tight ends and I don’t think the New England Patriots’ defense is as “bad” as the experts at ESPN tend to think.

And that’s at the heart of why I’m placing my money at the sports book at the Mirage in Las Vegas on the Pats.

Super Bowl XLVI will be much more than just a football game. For one thing, next Sunday’s battle will be indoors and that means weather won’t have anything to do with the outcome. Not that it favored one team over the other anyway – both teams play outdoors in the Northeast – but it means that skills won’t be compromised or even eliminated by cold, rain, wind or snow.

This is also a revenge game and there isn’t any greater motivation than revenge. Both coaches and both quarterbacks competed against each other in Super Bowl XLII. However, there will be no Michael Strahan back this time to get Brady out of his rhythm. The Giants beat the Patriots 17-14 in 2008. The Patriots are still steaming over that one.

Justin Tuck

However, to be fair, the Giants defense is still formidable and it will be up to the Pats offensive line to try and find a way to shut down Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul.

“Look at ’07. That was pretty much the reason why we were in the game, because we kept him off-rhythm,” Tuck told a news conference in East Rutherford, N.J. on Saturday. “Obviously he is the main reason why they are successful.

“The way to kill the snake is to take off his head. The way to kill an offence as potent as that one is making sure you take care of Brady. Our defensive front will put a lot of pressure on itself to make sure that we do our best to get after him.”

It’s obvious to the Giants that this year’s Super Bowl is all about the Pats quarterback. He’s either going to win it or the Giants D-Line is going to win it and as good as the Giants have been the past two weeks, I still like Brady.

This time, however, the Patriots aren’t 18-0 heading into the Super Bowl. They’re 15-3 and they know what it’s like to lose. Although in Brady’s case, losing hasn’t come very often. His playoff record is 16-5 and he’s tied with Joe Montana for most career playoff wins.

Need more reasons?

Aaron Hernandez cropped 200x300 Why Im Betting the Pats on Sunday

Aaron Hernandez: Can the Giants cover the Pats tight ends?

Super Bowl XLVI will be the fifth time Brady and his head coach Bill Belichick have appeared together in the Super Bowl, They have already won three times.

This season, Brady was second overall to Drew Brees in passing yards with 5,235. He was second to Aaron Rodgers in yards per completion at 8.6 yards per catch. He was fourth in passing percentage behind Brees, Rodgers, and Tony Romo(?) at 65.6 per cent. He completed 401 passes in 611 attempts. He was third behind Brees and Matthew Stafford in number of completions.

Now there has been talk that Brady is nursing an injury. The training staff say it’s an injury to the non-passing shoulder, but the way he missed some of his targets in the AFC Championship game (and I will concede that he was lucky to win that one), I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d been hurt much worse than the club’s medical staff let on.

Still, he survived the championship game with a 23-20 victory and even he will admit that he has struggled in the last four or five Pats playoff games. However, he says he’ll be at his best in the biggest game of the year.

“You try to be at your very best in the biggest game,” Brady said in his final news conference before heading off to Indy. “My teammates really count on that. Certainly, I count on that. There’s a lot of preparation that goes into that.

“Playing with confidence and anticipation and understanding the game plan and going out and executing it when it matters the most. That’s what it’s going to take.”

When you set out to lay your money down at a Vegas book – or even on a Sport Select ticket in Canada – you try to take every fact and intangible into consideration. When I look at the Giants I see a team that wasn’t very good during the regular season but has peaked in the playoffs. I see a terrific quarterback (Eli Manning) with a Super Bowl championship on his resume, a pair of efficient runningbacks (Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs) and a big-play receiver (Victor Cruz) who can change a game. I also see a sensational defense that’s at the top of its game.

But I don’t see Tom Brady and to me, he will be the difference next Sunday.

The Prize

We’ve had a great year in 2011-12 and I figure this wager will just top it off. The Doc and The Coach will have their picks and, of course, all of their rationalizations here at RC Sports Blog on Thursday.

So here’s the deal: The NFC champion New York Giants will meet the AFC champion New England Patriots for the National Football League Championship and the Vince Lombardi Trophy at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis at 5 p.m. CST this coming Sunday.

When it starts and ends my money will be on the favorite (3 points) New England Patriots to win 35-27.

We All Say Dumb Things…

dumb 300x240 We All Say Dumb Things...

Dumb

As the headline suggests, we all say dumb things. That certainly includes me. I’ll even say them on the radio.

Last week, on the Rise Up Show with Big Will and Miss Melissa on Streetz 104.7, I said three really dumb things. I didn’t say them all at once. I spread them out over the week so I could sound even dumber, more often.

I don’t normally say really dumb things, but when I do, it eats at me for days. This time, dumbness has eaten at me long enough. I said it, it was dumb, and with that, let me apologize for…

Toronto+Raptors+v+Miami+Heat+b3C4JZjUirAl 200x300 We All Say Dumb Things...

Another Jose Calderon brick.

1. On Tuesday morning, I said I liked the way the Toronto Raptors played basketball. I said that. I said it out loud to a listening audience on Streetz that really likes basketball and knows a lot about the game.

I had just watched the Raptors beat the Minnesota Timberwolves, 97-87. Man they looked good. Amir Johnson beat up Kevin Love and had 11 points and 19 rebounds. Andrea Bargnani scored 31. Jose Calderon ran the offence and shut down Ricky Rubio on D and he didn’t even throw up too many of those Jose Calderon clang-bang bricks. It was a nice effort.

So I went on the radio and said that the 4-5 Raptors were playing “good basketball,” and should break out of their early-season struggles.

Yeah, right. What a bonehead.

The Raptors proceeded to lose 93-78 to the dog-ass Washington Wizards, 98-91 at home to the D-League level Sacramento Kings, 95-90 at home to Indiana, 77-64 in Chicago and 93-84 to Atlanta (which really isn’t embarrassing at the worst of times). In that entire stretch of five straight losses, the Raptors had, maybe, three good quarters and Bargnani, clearly their best player despite those stupid spaghetti commercials he does, injured a calf muscle and missed three games.

When I said I liked the way the Raptors played, they were 4-5. By today’s admission that I was really dumb to say that I liked the way they played, they are now 4-10.

So dumb.

pierce buck 487 381 300x199 We All Say Dumb Things...

Buck's Re-signing is not so obvious.

2. On Friday morning, I said two really dumb things. The first one was a doozy:

I said, “Blue Bombers general manager Joe Mack held a news conference yesterday to say that his off-season priorities were to sign a new offensive coordinator, quarterback Buck Pierce and offensive lineman Brendan LaBatte. Thank you Captain Obvious.”

Well, after a sober second thought, it wasn’t so obvious. The offensive coordinator part is obvious and Brendan LaBatte is really obvious, but Buck Pierce? Not so much.

Pierce wants big dough to return. Mack doesn’t really have to pay him big dough. With the seven other CFL teams set at quarterback next season, no other team is going to sign Pierce for the amount of money he wants ( a base of at least $200,000). Meanwhile, Mack knows that Pierce had virtually the same numbers as Michael Bishop did back in 2009 and we all remember that the local mainstream media laughed at Michael Bishop. There is no need to sign Pierce for more than he’s worth with Alex Brink and Joey Elliott ready to go.

In fact, you could argue that if Mack signs LaBatte and the offensive line continues to get better, Brink and Elliott could provide head coach Paul LaPolice with a great training camp battle at the QB’s position.

Joe Mack was not Captain Obvious because Buck Pierce, for too much money, is not an obvious signing.

Pats6 1362893cl 8 We All Say Dumb Things...

Tom Brady: Shoulda had more faith.

3. Also on Friday, I said the New England Patriots would beat the Denver Broncos by two touchdowns. What an idiot.

Sure, I picked New Orleans and Green Bay to win on Friday morning during our weekly Streetz NFL picks with Tahl East, but we both hedged those bets. Neither one of us was quite convinced that the Packers or Saints were a guarantee, and we both said so. In fact, we both took New Orleans while holding our noses.

But New England? I came right out and said “the Pats win by two touchdowns.”

Wrong. They won by five touchdowns. And if Tom Brady and Bill Belichick hadn’t called off the dogs late in the game, it could have been seven or eight. New England was so much better than Denver it wasn’t even a fair fight.

I should have known better. And, yes, it was dumb to think that Denver could finish within two touchdowns of that New England team.

Because Baltimore won’t, either.

Favre Saves Chilly, Nobody Can Save Wade Phillips

MINNEAPOLIS — Brett Favre saved Brad Childress’s job, but it doesn’t appear as if anyone can save Wade Phillips’s job.

Last night, the Green Bay Packers massacred the Dallas Cowboys 45-7 and immediately after the debacle, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said “people will suffer the consequences.” Despite that vote of confidence Jones gave Phillips this past week, I can’t imagine old Wade will be around by the end of the day. Owners have surprised me before, but I just don’t believe Jones is going to ride this one out.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns were unbeatable yesterday, Peyton Manning couldn’t pull off the same miracle ol’ Brett pulled off here at Mall of America Field and Oakland won a thriller to go to 5-4 on the season.

It was an exciting day in the NFL, but frankly, nothing was more exciting than the Brett Favre/Adrian Peterson-led comeback by the Vikings. If Favre had any time at all to throw, the Vikings would be unbeatable. As it is, a 41-year-old man playing on a broken ankle behind the most porous offensive line in the NFL had the greatest passing day of his already remarkable Hall of Fame career.

Let’s take a close look at the highlights of Week 9 in The League…

Last night…

Green Bay 45 Dallas 7

Wonder how long Wade Phillips has as coach of the Cowboys. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers completed 27 of 34 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns.

Yesterday afternoon….

Minnesota 27 Arizona 24 (OT)

The Vikings scored two touchdowns in the final 3:34 of regulation, then Ryan Longwell won it with a 35-yard field goal in overtime. Brett Favre, in his record 293rd consecutive start threw for a career high 446 yards while Adrian Peterson had two touchdowns including a receiving touchdown, the first since his very first game in 2007.

Cleveland 34 New England 14

Cleveland rookie quarterback Colt McCoy scrambled for a touchdown while RB Peyton Hillis ran for a career-high 184 yards and two scores. Cleveland’s defense also beat the stuffing out of the Patriots.

NY Jets 23 Detroit 20 (OT)

Nick Folk kicked a 36-yard field goal with no time on the clock to tie the game at the end of regulation and then kicked a 30-yard field early in overtime to win it.

New Orleans 34 Carolina 3

Drew Brees, 27-for-43, 253 yards and two touchdowns.

Baltimore 26 Miami 10

The Ravens’ Joe Flacco, 20-of-27 for 266 yards and two touchdowns.

San Diego 29 Houston 23

The Chargers Phillip Rivers, 17-for-23, 295 yards and four touchdowns

Chicago 22 Buffalo 19

Chicago’s Israel Idonije, from Brandon, had three tackles and a half a sack.

Atlanta 27 Tampa Bay 21

Atlanta’s Michael Turner had 24 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Ryan, 24-for-36, 235 yards and a touchdown.

Philadelphia 26 Indianapolis 24

Michael Vick, 17-for-29 for 218 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 74 yards and another TD.

Oakland 23 Kansas City 20 (OT)

Sebastien Janikowski kicked a 33-yard field goal to win it in OT.

NY Giants 41 Seattle 7

The Giants Eli Manning 21-for-32 for 291 yards and three touchdowns. Ahmad Bradshaw had two rushing touchdowns.

Tonight, in the Monday Nighter, it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati to play the Bengals.

If Moss is Really a Viking Again, Ol’ Brett Might Smile Again

TAMPA, Fla. — It appears Randy Moss is back in Minnesota.

Just talked to a couple of NFL buddies here in Tampa and the deal is apparently done: Moss from the New England Patriots to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a third-round draft pick.

Doesn’t sound like New England got much in return, but ever since Moss went off, in a Week 1 rant, that was designed either to get him a huge contract extension or a one-way ticket out of Belichickland, it was painfully apparent that the talented but emotional receiver was no longer welcome in Foxboro. He saw the football occasionally, especially in the end zone, but he was no longer a favorite of anybody in Patriot Blue. In 2010, he’s had nine receptions in four weeks, for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Monday night, in New England’s 41-14 shellacking of the Miami Dolphins, Moss had his first game without a reception as a member of the Patriots.

As a result, the Patriots have run him out of Dodge and he’s now somebody else’s problem.

However, you have to know that Vikings quarterback Brett Favre loves him. Remember, back in 2006, when Oakland wanted to move Moss and Favre wanted him in Green Bay. Favre sulked almost every day after Moss went from Oakland to New England and not to Green Bay.

Now, without Sidney Rice, plus a bead-achy Percy Harvin and a guy named Berrian that can’t be found on the field with bloodhounds and searchlights, Favre finally has a legitimate downfield threat and a guy with actual speed and skill. And it will be fun to watch Moss jump into the arms of Winnipeg’s Syd Davy at the Metrodome again.

I can’t wait for Monday night when the Vikings take on the New York Jets in the Big Apple and I really can’t wait until Oct. 17 when the Vikings play at home against the Dallas Cowboys.

Not that Moss is going to turn around the Vikings season, but he’ll suddenly add some intrigue to an otherwise mediocre and only marginally interesting Vikings team.

The Mainstream Media Lunacy Just Gets Crazier. At this Rate, we’ll Never Run Out of Things to Write About.

MINNEAPOLIS — We have a crisis of intelligence in this world. It seems that the more you read a newspaper, the dumber you get.

It was Thomas Jefferson who said: “As for what is not true, you will always find abundance in the newspapers,” and that has never been more evident than it has been this week.

And hey, it’s only Tuesday.

1) A headline in USA Today on Tuesday read: “NFL Replay: Fourth-Down call Stain on Belichick’s Record.”

Stain? What, are newspaper reporters doing now? Pouring tomato juice on people’s hoodies? A stain? It was a call late in a regular season game that ended up backfiring and costing the Patriots the game. A game. One game. Big effin’ deal. The Pats will still be no worse than 12-4 this season.

Stain? What kind of media-created bull-crap is that? A stain on Belichick’s record was the time he spent in Cleveland screwing up the Browns. Taking a chance on Tom Brady is not a stain. It’s not even a blip.

The Pats are 6-3 and still in first place. All that decision did was guarantee that when the two teams meet again in the AFC Championship game, the TV ratings will be right through the freakin’ roof.

2) The Ottawa Sun just cracks me up. This is the newspaper that either can’t get a trade rumour right or simply makes these rumours up.

I know that suggesting a newspaper makes things up is about the worst thing you can say, but goodness gracious, the trade rumours started in Ottawa would be comical if they weren’t so sad. These guys can’t even get a lie straight.

We’ve spent some time chronicling their errors, but let it go because it just got so silly. This week, however, we just couldn’t resist.

Now, for most of this season, the Ottawa Sun has been reporting – and I use the word reporting lightly – that the Chicago Blackhawks were on the verge of trading either Jonathan Toews or Patrick Kane or both. The Sun claimed the Hawks had a cap problem and needed  to move one of their stars. We’ve already called that rumour a crock.

Then, yesterday, word filtered out of Chicago that the Hawks were on the verge of signing both Toews and Kane  to new contracts. At least eight years each according to my source inside the Hawks.

Wow! How can one newspaper be so wrong so often and still sell copies of their newspaper? Are people that stupid? Or are they just looking for a good morning laugh?

3) Newspapers from coast-to-coast, desperate to write about some mundane NHL issue other than the copy to the headline: “The Leafs are Lousy Again,” have had a big month writing about head shots and all the horrible bodychecks being tossed out in the NHL.

NHL general managers are looking at the issue and might come down hard on the league’s headhunters. But there is one thing our newspaper-employed tall foreheads forgot. They forgot to ask an NHL GM who is an expert on the subject.

This week, before I did my radio hit with Eric Nelson on WCCO in Minneapolis, Eric’s guest was Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher. Fletcher said he didn’t much like checks to the head, but he also said the NHL will put the issue into perspective.

“During the course of the season there are about 46,000 bodychecks,” Fletcher pointed out. “In a bad year, 10 are head shots. We want them out of the game, but there isn’t a big panic over this. The numbers suggest there isn’t a problem at all.”

Of course, he’s right and the fearmongers with the truck loads of ink trying to make up stories where none exist are wrong. Again.

4) I just love Canada’s network TV weasels, don’t you?

According to Canadian Press:  “Canada’s largest private broadcaster laid out a scorched earth scenario Monday if it doesn’t get paid for its signals, suggesting more station closings and even yanking signals from cable.”

Wow! “Yanking signals from cable.” That means because nobody watches it now on cable, Canadians would be sure to watch it when the only way they can receive it is with rabbit ears.

“‘We are not going to be here operating conventional TV unless we can make a business of it,’ CTVglobemedia president Ivan Fecan told the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.”

That makes sense. But why can’t you make a business of it? Is it because so few people actually watch it that selling overpriced commercial time is now damn near impossible?

I love listening to people like Fecan tell us that he’ll have to dump local television if he doesn’t get money from the cable companies. If Fecan gets money from the cable companies, this is how it will go: First he’ll line his owners pockets, then his pockets and then the pockets of his executive buddies. At that point, he’ll used what’s left over to go out and buy more shows from the United States that we already watch on U.S. stations.

How’s this for a response to that malarkey? Take your stupid signal off cable and let’s replace it with ESPN. I’d love to see ESPN HD on Channel 210 on my Shaw HD service.

I don’t know about most of you, but if CTV pulled the plug tomorrow, I wouldn’t miss it. In fact, just like CBC and its $1 billion per year in taxpayer-funded welfare, can’t say as I watch it now.

Favre says he “feels like a Jet.” So much for 16 years in Green Bay.

Thanks to the NFL Network for telecasting Saturday night’s battle between the New York Jets and the Washington Redskins. It was worth the watch.

Granted, it wasn’t worth the watch after the first quarter, but, hey, that first 45 minutes as we got to witness Brett Favre in a New York Jets uniform was certainly worth the time commitment.

Our man Flava Favre told the New York media that he was “having fun again,” and one can certainly understand why. The Jets will be a pretty good football team with Favre’s competitive fire and quick release at the helm.

It also doesn’t hurt that his offensive line is at least decent, if not actually quite good.

During the post-game news conference, Favre said he asked Jets head coach Eric Mangini to let him play some more. When the first quarter was over, Favre was done, but in his own mind he felt like a rookie trying to get a shot at the clipboard-carrier’s job. He was like that 23-year-old sixth-round draft pick right out of Southern Mississippi Wesleyan Agriculture, Teaching, Military and Firearms College. He wanted to play an entire pre-season game. That’s nuts. That’s Favre.

“I asked him if I could play some more and he (Mangini) said, ‘Let me think about it,’” Favre told the media. “As he turned away, he turned back and said, ‘I thought about it.’”

Favre didn’t play again. But he looked pretty comfortable when he did play.

Ol’ Flava Favre had obviously learned the better part of his new playbook. He went five-for-six passing for 48 yards and threw a four-yard touchdown strike to Dustin Keller. When he left the game, the Jets were ahead 7-0 and Favre, only 10 days removed from the Packers, was the best player in a Jets uniform.

“It worked out better than I thought it would,” Favre said at the news conference. “Not that I thought it would go badly.”

Admitting that it was all just “a little weird” to be suited up in Jets green while playing at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands, Favre lasted 14 plays and according to the Associated Press, Mangini said Favre had between 30 and 40 plays to work with.

Favre is going to be just fine in New York and the Jets just might give the Patriots a bit of an argument this season.

In the meantime, the San Francisco 49ers massacred Favre’s old team, the Green Bay Packers, 34-6, on Saturday night. Aaron Rodgers went nine-for-16 for 58 yards, Brian Brohm went four-for-nine for 33 yards and Matt Flynn went five-for-six for 33 yards. Rodgers was sacked four times and the 49ers finished the game with six sacks in total.

At this stage, Packers GM Ted Thompson looks like a moron. He’s the guy who drafted Rodgers, he’s the guy who refused to trade for Randy Moss, he’s the guy who wanted Favre out. The Packers might never recover from Thompson’s ego and idiocy.

Meanwhile, the Jets and their fans are wandering the streets of the Big Apple loving every minute of Favre’s exile in New York.

I wonder if Packers coach Mike McCarthy ever looked in the mirror and said to himself, “Am I better off with Brett Favre as my No. 1 quarterback and Aaron Rodgers as my No. 2 or with Aaron Rodgers as No. 1 and Brian Brohm as No. 2?”

Guess not, because if he did, he wouldn’t have made that silly statement that Brett Favre “wasn’t in the right frame of mind” to play for the Packers.

Poor Green Bay. All by themselves, they made Detroit and Minnesota the teams to beat in the NFC North.
